The idea of star-crossed lovers has always been a thing that fascinated me as a young boy. A man and a woman, seemingly from different parts of the globe, are carved from the fabric of destiny itself to be meant for each other. The spaces in between the lines of that very fabric would be the place where they meet, one where the outside world does not know a thing.
When the moon struck in this familiar hour of the night, their bodies awoke from their day-long slumber and sought to find each other in the vastness of the land above. You already know where this story ends. They eventually get married, have babies, and settle somewhere in God’s green earth forever and ever as happily as they could be.
That’s all fine and dandy, but live long enough in this cold, cruel world and you’ll know that that’s just a thing of the imagination. Wander through fiction long enough and you’ll see the truth buried beneath all the lies. A conversation that I had a few days back sparked this curiosity of mine once more, and I decided to answer what love truly is about, at least from my perspective.
Love is not just easy, it’s also hard. Love can sometimes be blissful, but it can also be painful. Love can take you to the greatest of highs, and also to the lowest of lows. Love can make you do great things, but it can also make you do the worst ones. Love is good if done correctly. Love can also twisted and perverted if it’s given to the wrong hands.
Love is also commitment, but love can also be learning to let go. Love is singing songs to the one who owns your heart, but it’s also giving way and keeping silent whenever the situation calls for it. Love can also take many forms, between a man and a woman, a woman to a woman, or a man to a man, one that other people are not yet ready to fully embrace, but still exists beautifully regardless of how they feel.  Love is a myriad of things, one that I know, for sure, I’m not ready to engage in again.
But sometimes, if you look out at the street with all the thousands of people passing you by, you can’t help but feel scratches of that all-encompassing thing inevitably flow through you, making you do great things as well. You see mothers and fathers cradling their young ones for as long as they can, knowing full well that someday that child will eventually leave their nest.
You see elderly couples holding hands while walking down the street, not letting their familiarity with each other stop them from enjoying the last few minutes of sunshine before it turns to midnight. You could see couples, all in differing shapes and sizes, show gestures of affection, regardless of where they are at. Confident that what they have in their embrace right now is worth showing to the world, despite its ephemeral nature.
Seeing all those happen right before my very eyes, reminded me once more that despite the darkness that ever saturates our skies, it was promised that there would be a few bright spots along the way that would keep us going despite the overwhelming circumstances. Even if you find yourself hurting right now, or were hurt by someone dearest to you, distance yourself far enough from things that you love, and sooner or later, the pain will go away, and slowly but surely we are able to finally hope again.
Our eyes have slowly opened to what this world offers, as flawed as it is, it’s all that we have. All we can do is embrace it, feel it in the palm of our hand, gaze at it,  smell its unique scent, and carry it wherever we go. Everything is going to be all right, by the end. We’re all going to get through this, I’m certain of it.
